Marathon Training Summary - Week 3

Well... this week didn't go very well. I had a very interesting and rather frightening experience on Saturday morning when I went for my race-pace 6 mile run. Started out great at about 7:30/mile for the first couple of miles. Then, I started to really labor with my breathing. I thought at first that I'd just gone out too hard. After all, I'm shooting for 9:00 pace on the marathon, but doing my race pace training at 8:00 pace, just for a little insurance. So, 7:30/mile is a lot faster than I needed to be going.

Well, I slowed quite a bit for the next 3 miles, and had hit an average of 7:45/mile for 5.5 miles, when I had to stop, because I was coughing up phlegm and mucus like crazy. I wiped off my mouth with my shirt, and noticed it was pink. Apparently, I'd been cough up a little blood! Hmmm... that's never happened before. My chest felt pretty raw and tight, so I figured I'd best pack it in for the day, and I walked home very slowly the last half mile.

I wonder if my lungs got a little irritated by the hot, dirty air in Phoenix the couple of days before that I spend there. Couple that with a return to altitude, and I think that may have been the problem. In any event, I skipped the long run on Sunday to be on the safe side.
